This book is part of the "Selected Works of Hong Kong Literature" series, a large-scale anthology overseen by Mr. POON Yiu-Ming, Director of the Museum of Hong Kong Literature. The series is edited by renowned scholar Professor HUANG Zi-Ping, with writer and senior editor SHU Fei serving as associate editor. For this particular volume, Mr. XU Gang, a descendant of XU Di-Shan, was specially invited to serve as the editor.
In 1935, upon the recommendation of HU Shi, XU Di-Shan, then 42 years old, traveled to Hong Kong for his appointment at the University of Hong Kong. In September of that year, he attended and chaired the first departmental meeting of the School of Chinese. In January 1936, the School of Chinese at the University of Hong Kong was officially reorganized, and XU Di-Shan was appointed as a professor. On the night of July 28, 1941, he suddenly experienced back pain, sweating, and difficulty breathing. The doctor diagnosed him with heart disease. On the afternoon of August 4, he passed away unexpectedly at the age of 48. XU Di-Shan was buried in the Hong Kong Chinese Christian Churches Union Pokfulam Road Cemetery. His tombstone is simple, inscribed with "The Tomb of Professor XU Dishan of the University of Hong Kong." XU Dishan's tenure at the University of Hong Kong spanned approximately seven years, which was the busiest period of his life. He was not only engaged in educational reforms but also actively participated in social activities, attended numerous meetings, gave interviews, and delivered public lectures. His activities were extensive, covering various fields such as politics, culture, arts, education, and religion.
This book includes XU Di-Shan's novels, prose, plays, music, essays, and papers written during his time in Hong Kong (1935-1941).
