"Easterlies of the night call to bloom blossoms of a thousand trees, As if blowing adrift stars that drizzle like rain. Precious horses and lavish carriages go by leaving a scented trail. Phoenix flutes music perform as the timekeeper witnesses the turning of hours, Throughout the night lanterns in the shape of fish and dragons dance and gyrate." This is the vibrant scene of the Lantern Festival depicted in Xin Qiji's poetry.
Lanterns, of course, are the highlight of the Lantern Festival.
Chinese lanterns have evolved over two thousand years since the Han Dynasty, embodying the arts of painting, calligraphy, and paper-cutting. As night falls and the lanterns are lit, patterns of dancing dragons, soaring phoenixes, carp leaping over the dragon gate, and blooming plum blossoms unfold, each carrying its own auspicious meaning.
Let’s follow the child's steps, open the picture book, and enjoy the lanterns…
